“Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses' hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.”
Exodus 17:11-13 ESV
The Israelites had to fight many enemies on their journey to the Promised Land. God led them and provided for their needs, but He still expected them to get their hands dirty and their sandals dusty. They needed to grow into a strong people if they were to survive— and thrive— under God’s leadership.
This truth hasn’t changed.
God still calls us to be courageous and strong as we pursue what He has promised. We can’t live as victims or shrink back in fear. No territory will be gained and no victory won without trusting God and stepping forward in faith. He provides exactly what we need.
Often, that provision comes through people.
Moses didn’t stand alone on the hill. When his strength failed, Aaron and Hur stood beside him and held up his arms. Joshua didn’t fight alone in the valley either— he depended on the warriors around him. Everyone had a role. Everyone mattered. Together, they experienced victory.
This is how God still works today.
We were never meant to fight our battles alone. God places people in our lives to support us when we grow weary—and He invites us to do the same for others.
We all need someone to hold our arms up when we grow tired.
So consider these questions:
What battles are you facing right now?
Who is helping hold your arms up?
Who in your life needs support today?
If these questions are hard to answer, it may be time to build deeper community. Battles are rarely won in isolation.
Ask God who needs your support this week and how you can serve them. You don’t have to do something dramatic. Faithfulness often looks simple and practical— bringing a meal, offering a ride, giving financially, making a phone call, or simply listening.
God has uniquely created each of us to give in specific ways. The way you support others may not look like anyone else’s way, and that’s exactly how God designed it. He knows what is needed, and He uses willing hearts and different gifts to care for His people.
Together, we can reach our Promised Land!
