I’ve been reading through the Bible each year for over 17 years. I don’t share that to pat myself on the back, but to testify to how life-giving and meaningful the habit has been. A couple of years ago, I tried giving it up to focus on other Bible studies. Within a week, I knew I needed to return to my routine of starting the day with a fresh word from Scripture. There’s something profound about seeing the big picture of God’s story and making connections between the Old and New Testaments—it’s all one grand narrative of God reaching out to us.

Maybe this is your year to read through the Bible. You don’t have to start with Genesis and end with Revelation. Choose what works for you. You could read through the Psalms, focus on the New Testament, or simply begin each day with a proverb. Even a short daily habit changes things: more joy, a lighter step, and a deeper patience with yourself and others. God’s Word never returns void—you can take that promise all the way to heaven’s bank of blessings.

In John 4, Jesus uses water as an analogy for the Holy Spirit. Just as our bodies cannot survive long without water, our souls cannot thrive without the living water He gives. Through the Spirit, our hearts and minds are opened to the truth of Scripture, and daily Bible reading becomes a stream of transformation, shaping us to look more like Christ.

So keep your Bible open every day. Let the Word flow into your soul, providing fertile ground for the Spirit to teach, renew, and transform you. Don’t let your passion for Jesus dry up this year. Commit to opening your Bible daily, even if it’s just a verse. Over time, those drops of living water will well up into a spring that prepares you for eternity with Him.

Open your Bible, and your heart, ready to receive!
